The Newcastle United fans down in the Transfer Tavern refuse to give their side a hard time, despite losing to 2-0 to Tottenham on Sunday.

The Toon Army have rather singled at one player, Jonjo Shelvey, whose petulance saw him red carded just a few minutes into the second half.

The England international was caught treading on Dele Alli directly in front of referee Andre Mariner who had no choice but to send him off.

It’s not the first time Shelvey’s indiscretions have got him in trouble and now Rafa Benitez has a huge decision to make over who should replace him at the heart of the Newcastle midfield.

Benitez’s side were going fairly strongly up until then, but and Benitez cannot afford for many more game defining moments like that this season.

We think the Spaniard needs to field this XI to see off Huddersfield on Sunday…

GK: ROB ELLIOT

Elliot perhaps should have done better for Ben Davies’ second, but otherwise, the ‘keeper kept Newcastle in the game.

The shot-stopper needs to remain in good form or risks handing an opportunity to Karl Darlow.

RB: JAVIER MANQUILLO

The former Liverpool full-back settled in nicely on his debut for the club. He was required to assist more defensively following Shelvey’s red card, though did impress with an industrious performance.

CB: CHANCEL MBEMBA

The Congo international was introduced midway through the first-half following the injury to new signing Florian Lejeune. Mbemba should expect a start after his teammate left St. James’ Park on crutches.

CB: JAMAAL LASCELLES

The captain came on to replace the injured Paul Dummett at left-back. Moving into central defence, Lascelles will need a big performance to convince Benitez he’s a certain starter.

A vocal leader, the former Nottingham Forest man needs to back it up with a big game.

LB: CIARAN CLARK

He registered a solid performance upon his return to the top-flight. The former Aston Villa player will be hoping for a better season than his previous Premier League campaign and certainly is a popular figure in the Tavern.

CM: ISAAC HAYDEN

Put in a good defensive shift against Poch’s side, particularly in the second half. He started 28 of Newcastle’s 46 league games last season, but will be desperate to be a mainstay this time around.

Has a big future at this level.

CM: MIKEL MERINO

Having impressed over the course of pre-season, summer signing Mikel Merino will be tasked with creative duties in the absence of Shelvey.

Looked assured when he came on for a cameo against Spurs and could be a difference-maker in west Yorkshire.

RM: MATT RITCHIE

The Scot was ineffective going forward against Spurs, but is likely to have better luck against David Wagner’s Huddersfield.

You can always guarantee Ritchie gives it 100%.

CAM: AYOZE PEREZ

Perez largely failed to offer the team much throughout the defeat to Spurs. Benitez may be considering bringing in a new number 10 – if Mike Ashley will allow it.

LM: CHRISTIAN ATSU

The former Chelsea man forced Hugo Lloris into a low save, but probably should have done better with his effort. He will need to be more effective against Huddersfield.

Atsu revealed after the game that Shelvey had apologised to his teammates.
