The Newcastle United supporters over by the jukebox cannot hide their disappointment in this summer’s transfer window.

A lot of high hopes have changed to ill feeling since the Magpies pipped Brighton to first place on the final day of the Championship.

It appears Rafa Benitez has struggled to receive backing in the transfer market this summer and the Spaniard will, for the most part, be sticking with what he has.

There have been suggestions that the Toon Army are being ungrateful. Jacob Murphy, at £12m from Norwich has been most expensive signing, while Eibar’s Florian Lejeune cost nearly £10m.

Fortunately, Benitez’s side have a superb record against Tottenham in recent years and their fans may not be too disheartened to see Pochettino’s side up first.

How Newcastle will line-up against Spurs on the opening day is hard to call. But we’ve been debating and believe this XI could beat last years runners up…

GK: ROB ELLIOT

It’s a tough choice between Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow, but Republic of Ireland international’s terrific form for Newcastle in the Premier League last time means he pips the former Nottingham Forest man to start between the sticks.

RIGHT BACK – JAVIER MANQUILLO

The former Liverpool defender has been welcomed back to England by Rafa Benitez this summer. The Magpies will be hoping Manquillo’s second spell in the Premier League is more prosperous than his first.

A largely unheralded arrival, though will cover DeAndre Yedlin.

CENTRE-BACK – CIARAN CLARK

Ciaran Clark impressed in the Championship for Rafa’s side after making the switch from Aston Villa. The 27-year-old is now back in the Premier League and desperate to avoid another relegation.

Needs to carry on the form he showed last year.

CENTRE BACK – FLORIAN LEJEUNE

Lejeune is another new signing for Benitez from La Liga. The French defender was commanding for Eibar last season, helping the Spanish side to achieve an impressive 10th place finish.

Has impressed during pre-season.

LEFT-BACK – PAUL DUMMETT

The 25-year-old recently declared himself unavailable for international football, though it’s understood he does want to represent his country in the future.

He will have to prove himself in the Premier League in any case.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD – JONJO SHELVEY

Despite being unable to rescue Newcastle from relegation, Shelvey has impressed since his £12m move from Swansea in January 2016.

He will be keen to return to the England set up ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD – MOHAMED DIAME

The former Hull midfielder has plenty of talent, but lacks consistency. Diame was outstanding for Newcastle in the Championship, but will need to improve even further.

The Premier League is a different ball game.

CAM – AYOZE PEREZ

Perez continues to be a fan favourite at Newcastle. He has all the tools to be a top player for the Magpies as he looks to build on his nine goals and six assists from last season.

RIGHT-WING- CHRISTIAN ATSU

The ex-Chelsea winger made his loan move permanent after a successful spell in the Championship with the Magpies. Atsu will keen to prove himself to his former employers and critics this season.

LEFT-WING – MATT RITCHIE

Many questioned Ritchie’s decision to drop down a division after leaving Bournemouth for Newcastle.

However, the Scotland international was vindicated as he established himself in Benitez’s side last term and was an integral part of orchestrating a swift return to the top flight.
