Manchester United supporters have in been in good voice in the Transfer Tavern this week as their Champions League campaign got off to the perfect start.

Jose Mourinho’s side saw their 100% start to the Premier League come to an end after drawing 2-2 at Stoke City last weekend, yet they got back to winning ways courtesy of a 4-0 victory over struggling Everton on Sunday.

In fact, they did indeed go into that encounter with Ronald Koeman’s men off the back of a win having beaten Basel 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku, and Marcus Rashford sealing a comfortable victory for Mourinho’s men.

And they will turn their attentions to another competition in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, as United will begin the defence of their title at home to Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion, who currently sit 21st in the Championship having won just one of their opening seven league games.

Thus, the Red Devils will go in as heavy favourites to reach the fourth round, yet manager Mourinho may look to rotate his squad given their Premier League and Champions League commitments this season.

Nonetheless, if the Portuguese selects this starting eleven, Burton won’t know what hit them on Wednesday…

Sergio Romero

David de Gea is the undisputed number one at Old Trafford, yet the midweek visit of Burton Albion could see Sergio Romero earn his first start of the season.

The 30-year-old moved to United back in 2015 and has since then earned 28 appearances for the Red Devils, 12 of which coming in their Europa League success last time round.

But with de Gea maintaining his status as one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, it’s going to be incredibly tough for the Argentina international to force his way into Mourinho’s side, but all he can do is put in a commanding display against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Matteo Darmian

Full-back Matteo Darmian looked certain to leave United this time last year having struggled to force his way into Mourinho’s reckoning, yet he went on to appear 29 times in all competitions for the club last term.

With the full-back options arguably the one area in the Red Devils squad which isn’t overly convincing (Antonio Valencia aside), the Italy international will again be a key part of the squad this time round, highlighted by two appearances already in all competitions, and only one exclusion from a matchday squad.

With Valencia likely to be rested, Darmian looks set for an opportunity against Burton on Wednesday.

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling’s future at Manchester United is far from certain following the arrival of Victor Lindelof, as well as the fine form of fellow centre-backs Eric Bailly and Phil Jones.

The England international has yet to appear in the Premier League for the Red Devils this term and played in just 18 last term, with the improved form of compatriot Jones, as well as the decent efforts of Bailly, Daley Blind, and Marcos Rojo last term, pushing him down the pecking order.

However, having played against Basel in midweek, Smalling may get another chance to stake a claim for a first team spot against Nigel Clough’s Burton on Wednesday.

Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof hasn’t made the greatest of starts to life at Manchester United, having made the move to Old Trafford from Benfica during the summer.

The 23-year-old endured a difficult debut against Real Madrid in the UEFA Supercup last month and has, as a result, yet to feature for the Red Devils in the Premier League, although he did play the full 90 minutes against Basel last week.

And he may get another chance to impress against Burton on Wednesday.

Luke Shaw

England international Luke Shaw endured a testing time at United last season, with injuries, a loss of form, and criticism from Mourinho resulting in the left-back playing just 19 times in all competitions.

And injury has thwarted his early-season progress this time round as well, having yet to feature for the Red Devils, but three appearances in Premier League 2 suggests that he is finding his way back to full fitness.

And what better way to test that than a first start of the season against the Championship side at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Michael Carrick

Midfielder Michael Carrick penned a new one-year deal to remain at United over the summer, and was confirmed as the club’s new captain following the departure of Wayne Rooney.

However, the former England international has yet to make a first team appearance for the club this term, remaining an unused substitute against Real Madrid, Basel, and Stoke City, but the Carabao Cup could be the perfect time to get him back in amongst the action.

And with Paul Pogba expected to be out for a while, Mourinho may need the 36-year-old up to speed for future league clashes, so giving him minutes against Burton makes complete sense.

Marouane Fellaini

Marouane Fellaini came off the bench in place of the injured Paul Pogba against Basel last week, and played a key part in their victory with a goal and an assist in their 3-0 success.

And having netted in their win over Leicester a few weeks ago, the Belgium international clearly makes a difference when he’s on the pitch, thus giving Mourinho another and indeed different option to turn to.

He’s only started once in all competitions this season though, yet may well double his starting tally against Burton on Wednesday.

Jesse Lingard

England international Jesse Lingard is another who hasn’t played much football for United this season, with his only start ending after 45 minutes against Real Madrid in the UEFA Supercup.

The 24-year-old has since been restricted to four substitute appearances in the Premier League as well as a 20-minute cameo against Basel last week, registering two assists in their 2-0 success over Leicester City a few weeks ago, as well as in their 4-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

A home game against Burton Albion provides the winger with the perfect chance to stake a claim for a first team place – a chance he must look to take on Wednesday.

Juan Mata

Spain international Juan Mata has appeared in all of Manchester United’s Premier League matches this term, but did drop to the bench against Stoke City last weekend.

The 29-year-old played a key part in helping Mourinho’s men win two trophies last season, and with Paul Pogba expected to be out for a while, the central midfielders will all have to chip in to have a similar influence as to what the Frenchman has so far this season.

Mata certainly has the ability, and may well get the chance to showcase it once again against Burton on Wednesday.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial is another who had a tricky time of it under Mourinho last season, earning just 25 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, albeit managing four goals and six assists in that time.

However, the France international hit the ground running this term with two goals in his first two Premier League matches, and he added another off the bench in their 4-0 drubbing of Everton over the weekend.

Nonetheless, the 21-year-old clearly has bags of potential, and unleashing him against Burton on Wednesday could get the best out of him once again.

Marcus Rashford

With Romelu Lukaku making a stunning start to life at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford is going to struggle to play in his preferred centre forward position this season.

However, with Lukaku likely to be rested against Burton, the England international could get the chance to showcase his striking abilities on Wednesday night, in a bid to continue his excellent run of form.

The 19-year-old has scored in three of his last four games for United and indeed netted for England against Slovakia during the recent international break, and the chance to play up top could see him build upon that run at Old Trafford this week.
