The Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have not enjoyed the best of weeks.

After a stellar start to the season, Manchester United’s campaign has come to a grinding halt after suffering three defeats in the space of a week.

A Europa League defeat to Feyenoord and Premier League losses to Man City and Watford have left the Man Utd faithful in the Football Transfer Tavern concerned about the season ahead.

With the games coming thick and fast, a trip to Northampton awaits for Jose Mourinho’s men, in a fixture that they will be expected to win convincingly as the Manchester giants look to turn around their fortunes.

Our landlord is expecting a rotated United side, though Mourinho’s concerns will likely force him into playing more first team regulars that he would have initially liked.

With that said, this 4-2-3-1 Man Utd XI will obliterate Northampton in the EFL Cup…

 GK – Sergio Romero

With David De Gea United’s first choice keeper, Sergio Romero has had to settle for a bit-part role so far this season.

Cup games offer his only real opportunity at regular game time, and you would expect that to continue against Northampton.

 RB – Matteo Darmian

Out of favor in the United first team, Darmian could get a game in the EFL Cup.

Fans in the Tavern have touted him with a move away, but until that time comes – expect him to do well for United.

 CB – Daley Blind

Daley Blind has had somewhat of a resurgence under Mourinho, and you would expect that Mourinho will want to keep him in the side to have that added experience in his back line.

Expect a solid showing.

 CB – Chris Smalling

He was solid last season, but he has suffered from a lack of game time under Mourinho.

He will likely get a game in order to give Bailly a rest ahead of a tough run of fixtures.

 LB – Marcos Rojo

Rojo had been expected to leave over the summer, but he remains at United.

He will never be a starter in the league under Mourinho, but the EFL cup offers an opportunity to rotate.

Expect him to get a run out on the left-hand side.

 DM – Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera has never really been given much of a chance at United, and has often fallen into the shadows amongst bigger, more high profile midfielders.

Mourinho does seem to like him though, and you would expect him to be given a chance.

Expect a great performance, as he often does.

 DM – Morgan Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin has never really found his feet at United, and cup games look like his only real opportunity at first team football at the moment.

He hasn’t quite found the form that he had at Southampton yet.

The United fans in the Tavern are hoping this game might be where the Frenchman refinds his form.

 RAM – Memphis Depay

Touted for greatness – achieved so very little.

Depay is on his last legs at United, and if he doesn’t start delivering soon – he will be out.

He could get another chance.

 CAM – Paul Pogba/Anthony Martial

Paul Pogba hasn’t really hit his stride at United yet, and he could find himself as one of the few first teamers to maintain his spot in the United first team.

He has had fair share of criticism in the Tavern, but our landlord is backing him to come through with the goods sooner or later.

Could Northampton be the opposite in which to prove his quality?

If Mourinho opts instead to rest him, expect Martial to come in and switch with either Juan Mata or Memphis Depay for a wider role.

 LAM – Juan Mata

Juan Mata has performed well when given a chance under Mourinho so far, but like so many others his role has been limited to that of a bit-part player so far.

You would be hard pressed to not back him to come through with a great performance, though.

 FWD – Marcus Rashford

The boy wonder.

Marcus Rashford continues to excite everyone in the Football Transfer Tavern – and our landlord is backing him to score yet another goal this week.
