With Jose Mourinho now at the helm, Manchester United are seemingly ready to resume their role as one of the major powers in world football once more. 

After a period of instability and mediocrity in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the Red Devils now have the sort of winning mentality to help restore former glories.

Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (three of the best players in Europe) are amongst the arrivals as the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ packs out a truly star-studded squad.

That trio are enough to send the Old Trafford faithful into delirious delight, though the Theatre of Dreams hasn’t always played host to such illustrious names.

Despite the club’s standing as one the greatest in the world, boasting some of the most legendary players in the game, United have had their fair share of dismal flops.

Though the club’s fanbase is as far reaching as it goes, only the die-hards will remember these lot.

Dong Fangzhuo

Dong Fangzhuo became the first Eastern Asian player ever signed by Manchester United back in 2004 and was touted for great things after a prolific spell at feeder club Royal Antwerp.

Still, despite the huge interest in the now 31-year-old, he only ever made one Premier League appearance while on the club’s books.

Had his contract terminated and found himself plying his trade back in China soon after joining.

Liam Miller

After impressing for Celtic, former Republic of Ireland international Liam Miller was drafted into the Old Trafford ranks back in 2004.

Seemingly never fancied by Sir Alex, he constantly found first-team appearances hard to come by amid the embarrassment of riches then available to the famous Old Scot.

When handed a rare starting berth, he did little to prove himself at such a level.

Farmed out to Leeds. That’s how bad he was.

Mark Lynch

Though the Red Devils boast a proud history of developing young talent that has progressed through their academy ranks, Mark Lynch proved unable to act on that.

After scoring an own goal on his debut, the defender was shipped out to Sunderland and it has been downhill ever since.

Michael Clegg

Another who progressed through the youth system, Michael Clegg leans more towards Lynch than the likes of David Beckham and company.

Amazingly, he managed to command a wage from the club for 9 years. Despite playing just 9 games.

Took the rather unusual step of retiring at 27, without injury.

Wonder why?
