For a club the size of the Old Trafford outfit, you’d expect them to have only great players but that is simply not the case.
For every Paul Scholes that’s come through there’s been plenty of attempts to try and replace the likes of him with players that clearly cannot perform in the Premier League – and it makes for pretty laughable reading, particularly if you’re not a United fan.
Our landlord has been loving some of the errors United have made over the years and discussing them with the many Red Devils punters in the Transfer Tavern. What’s hard to believe is that most of them were signed by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Here are four, then, who simply couldn’t cut it…
David Bellion
Bellion was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as the next big attacking star for the Red Devils but that did not happen.
The Frenchman made just 24 appearances in his three years at the club, with just four goals to his name – and he soon embarked on a journeyman career.
He played for Sunderland and West Ham where he was also unsuccessful and never really made it at the highest level.
Eric Djemba-Djemba
So good they named him twice? Not likely.
Djemba-Djemba was signed at around the same time as Bellion in a period of transfer dealings that were either sublime or ridiculous at Manchester United.
Cristiano Ronaldo would sign at this time but Djemba-Djemba certainly didn’t follow his career path.
The midfielder was never good enough and soon faded into obscurity.
Anderson
Anderson, at times, looked like a decent midfielder but at other times he certainly didn’t.
In the end, he couldn’t quite fulfil the potential that had made him an exciting prospect when he first signed.
His career soon went south after leaving Manchester United, as it does for many players and for the Brazilian, it was a serious case of what might have been at the club.
Diego Forlan
The Uruguayan is an exception to the path that Anderson followed in the sense that his career actually went upwards after leaving United.
The striker could not get into the groove in the Premier League and left for La Liga where he was duly a hit.
He shone for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid but his failure to cut it at United will surely always be a regret of his.
