With Jose Mourinho now in charge at Manchester United, there have been a number of rumours circulating around the Transfer Tavern regarding the future of some of United’s key players.

Mourinho, renowned for building teams in his own image, is expected to place players like Juan Mata on the transfer list this summer, given that he sold the midfielder whilst at Chelsea.

Not offering the defensive stability that Mourinho requires from a number 10, he will likely be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Here at the Tavern however, a lot of our punters disagree.

Mata has done relatively well at United, and we think there are a number of players that need to be sold at Old Trafford before Mata is placed at the front of the line.

With that said, here are FIVE players that Mourinho must sell on this summer to move Man Utd on as a club….

Marouane Fellaini

A player that many fans here in the Tavern will be pleased to see the back of, Fellaini is a player that has struggled to really find his feet while at Old Trafford.

Whenever he is selected, there is a collective sigh produced by all the United fans in the tavern.

He certainly offers something; we just aren’t sure what it is. He serves relatively well as an out ball, offering transitional play between midfield and attack, but he certainly isn’t of the quality that Mourinho has come to expect.

With rumours circulating over the future of Fellaini; he might well be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer.

 

Ashley Young

Another relatively unpopular player at United, Young has certainly done a job with the club since he joined from Aston Villa all those years ago.

He does offer utility, but at 30 years old; he is certainly past his peak. Injuries have really taken the energy out of Ashley Young, forcing him out of the first team for weeks at a time.

If you’ve been following the transfer tavern over the last few weeks, you will have noticed that a number of attacking midfielders have been linked with the club; only adding more barriers between Ashley Young and the first eleven.

It makes sense for both parties to call time on Young’s time at United.

Phil Jones

Another player that has suffered with injuries during his stint at Old Trafford, Phil Jones was touted for big things when he joined the club from Blackburn in 2011.

He really peaked during his first season, and he has slowly seen less game time since that point.

Over the past couple of years especially, he has really suffered with injuries which have caused his career to largely stagnate, offering very little since.

At this point, he really isn’t United quality; and a move might allow him to regain his form and progress into the player that we all thought he might be a few years ago.

Adnan Januzaj

Another player that had the world at his feet just a few years ago, Januzaj’s career has also stagnated since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club a few years ago.

After Ryan Giggs’ retirement in 2014, he was given the number 11 shirt; signalling what the club thought of him.

Since then, he simply hasn’t developed, and has failed to regain any sort of spot within the side.

Very little changed since a failed loan to Dortmund, and now seems the best time for the young Belgian to move on.

A sale with a buy back clause could work both parties; giving Januzaj the chance to develop whilst offering little risk for United.

With a number of players expected to join United this summer; he will likely get no chance to impress under Mourinho.

Antonio Valencia

Since joining Man United, Antonio Valencia has played everywhere on the pitch.

Stints as a defender, midfielder and striker have allowed him to gather nearly 200 appearances in a United shirt.

He was largely converted to a wing back under Van Gaal but with a number of defensive signings expected this summer, he will find it hard to find a place in the United team next year.

On top of that, his contract expires at the end of nex t season, meaning a sale needs to happen this summer if United want to profit on the Ecuadorian.
