5 players facing the chop at Manchester United in January

Manchester United fans at the Transfer Tavern have endured mixed form this season and are under no illusion that transfer business must be done in January.

Whilst they dream of huge signings that could spark life into their Premier League title push, our regulars are also discussing outgoing deals- identifying players they believe will face the chop when the transfer window reopens.

Louis Van Gaal is renowned for keeping a small, tightly-knitted squad but some media problems have presented themselves this season- and the Dutchman will be keen to offload the troublemakers when given the chance.

On top of this, the fans feel that there is some within the squad who just don’t have the calibre to make it at Old Trafford- and believe it’s best for all parties if they’re pushed out the exit door in the New Year.

Victor Valdes

Manchester United v Southampton - Barclays Premier League

There will be no surprises come the New Year when Victor Valdes leaves Old Trafford, ending a forgetful year-long association with Manchester United.

Arriving as a promising competitor for the goalkeeping position at United, with David De Gea’s future under intense speculation, Valdes struggled to secure much game-time throughout his first few months at the club.

Come the summer it was suggested Valdes would be first-choice, should De Gea leave, but Louis Van Gaal and the Spaniard sparked war as they clashed following the Dutchman’s suggestions Valdes refused to play for the reserve squad.

Sergio Romero was quickly signed and Valdes has now been left to rot, with United keen to offload but desperate for him not to join a Premier League rival.

Marcos Rojo

Rojo

Another player who could see an early-end to his Manchester United career following clashes with Louis Van Gaal is Argentine defender Marcos Rojo, who infuriated his manager over the summer due to problems with his passport.

Rojo has featured regularly for the first-team since, especially following Luke Shaw’s major injury, but speculation still surrounds the young defender and it’s clear he is walking a very thin line.

One misplaced step could see him out of Old Trafford for good.

James Wilson

Wilson 2

Regulars at the bar aren’t quite sure what James Wilson has done wrong to Louis Van Gaal, with the forward regularly overlooked despite United struggling in front of goal. Adding salt to the wounds is the fact Marouane Fellaini is preferred in a forward role.

Should a new attacker be signed in January then it could spell the end for Wilson, who would at least leave on-loan but may question his long-term future with Anthony Martial signed and United eying young forwards.

Paddy McNair

McNair

Paddy McNair could benefit from a loan stint away from Old Trafford, where he’d get regular first-team football, and with Van Gaal supposedly eying defensive recruits it could provide the young defender with that option.

Things could potentially get worse though, with allegations in the press that McNair was involved in a threesome incident with another team-mate and a girl, who was supposedly offered £10k to sleep with the duo.

Those allegations are being strenuously denied but it’s the sort of negative press Van Gaal hates.

Andreas Pereira

Pereira

The other member of the threesome fiasco, Andreas Pereira looks set to leave Old Trafford in January- though it’s expected to only be on a short-term basis, as the youngster eyes regular football to continue his development.

He’s stated his long-term intention is to fight for a place amid Van Gaal’s squad but the allegations in the press could prove to be his downfall.
