Liverpool fan’s discussions in the Transfer Tavern have taken a twist this afternoon, though January transfer window remains top of the agenda.
However, after weeks of discussing who Jurgen Klopp could bring into Anfield in the New Year, reports that Roma are eying Mamadou Sakho led to the conversation changing. Now, they’re debating who could leave.
With a strong squad at Klopp’s disposal, that will only increase with incoming deals in January, Liverpool fans at the bar are expecting a few faces to be offloaded in the New Year- some they want to see go, others not so much.
In the end, they ended up with five players who they believe could follow Sakho out of Merseyside in January- which, if it happens, would lead to a major shake-up within Liverpool’s first-team squad as they eye a return to Champions League football.

Alberto Moreno
Another name that adorned the back pages yesterday with reports of a potential exit from Liverpool is full-back Alberto Moreno, with his agent conceding that the Spaniard would be open to a potential move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.
Enjoying a revival in the first-team picture, Moreno would be sorely missed by Liverpool at this stage of the season so an exit would be more likely in the summer. However, with Real in the market for a full-back they could leave the Reds hapless to defend their asset.
Perhaps crucially, Moreno would be able to feature in Real Madrid’s Champions League knock-out campaign.
Joe Allen
A bit of a forgotten man at Liverpool, Joe Allen put in an impressive performance yesterday as the Reds hit Southampton for six in the League Cup semi-final. However, competitiveness within the squad could lead to an exit for the former Swansea City man.
With the likes of James Milner, Emre Can and Jordan Henderson all vying for a centre-midfield place, and links to incoming signings in this area, Allen could be pushed out of the picture entirely. This all depends on incoming deals though, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Divock Origi
A perfect hat-trick last night earned the Belgian youngster plenty of plaudits but there is still a long way to go. Competitiveness with Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge is tricky for the youngster, as is the decent form of Roberto Firmino.
Danny Ings’ long injury lay-off may have brought Origi more time to impress but links continue to be made to a top-striker, which would push Origi further down the pecking order if such a signing was to come about.
As such, Origi may have just over a month to impress Jurgen Klopp further.
Lucas Leiva
In a similar scenario to Joe Allen, the competitiveness in Liverpool’s midfield ranks could force Brazilian Lucas Leiva out the exit door. In fact, following links with an exit during the summer, Leiva would be a likely candidate to leave if a midfield signing was made.
Clearly past his best, Leiva wouldn’t been missed too much by Liverpool and this is an exit the Reds can approve without having to sign a replacement. If he’s still on Merseyside by February, we’ll be very surprised.
Jose Enrique
A likely exit will take place for Spanish defender Jose Enrique in January, a player that hasn’t quite found his feet on Merseyside since arriving from Newcastle United. Injury issues have played their part and the experienced man is now ousted from the first-team.
With plenty ahead of him in the pecking order, it would be a major surprise to see Enrique play for the first-team at Liverpool ever again. Recently he featured for the U21’s in the centre of defence but even if he adopts that position for the long-term, there’s still plenty ahead of him.
