With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract at PSG coming to an end this summer, Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern think that their club could do no better than sign the experienced Swede!
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his future at PSG has been the subject of a number of rumours around the Tavern for months now, and Zlatan recently revealed that he would be leaving the Parisian club when his contract expires this summer.
A reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United now seems most likely, yet the punters here in the Transfer Tavern have suggested that Chelsea would instead be the best destination for the experienced Swedish international.
After a dismal 2015/16 season, signing the striker would be a huge statement of intent for the blues, and certainly one that the Russian-owned club could afford.
Chelsea are in need of a key signing this summer, and our landlord thinks his punters are right; Ibrahimovic might just be the player that Chelsea need to kick start their season, so here’s FIVE reasons why….

The cost
Where else would you be able to get a 25 goal a season man for absolutely nothing?
Granted, his wage costs are going to be huge, but given that Ibrahimovic will be able to move on a free transfer, they are more than affordable for a club like Chelsea.
Giving Ibrahimovic a high wage one year contract works for both sides, and offers very little risk for Chelsea, a club who are no strangers to risking high wages on short term strikers (We’re looking at you Falcao!)
Misfiring strikers
Whilst Diego Costa appeared to regain his scoring boots towards the tail end of last season, there is no doubting that Chelsea are in need of some goal scoring talent up top.
The strangest signing of the January transfer window saw Alexandre Pato come in on a 6 month loan deal, and this almost certainly looks to be the end of his holiday in London, scoring just 1 goal and spending the majority of his time watching from the sidelines.
Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao also appear to be nearing the end of their time with the Blues, with both suffering long term injuries and failing to regain their form, often limited to appearances from the bench. In the case of Falcao – we don’t think anyone knows where he is anymore.
Ibrahimovic certainly offers something different to Diego Costa, and with Conte often utilizing two strikers; would there be any greater front 2 in England?
Experience
Departures up top aren’t all that is expected at the Bridge, and the last few years have seen Chelsea legends leave on a yearly basis; Petr Cech, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole to name a few.
Zlatan offers over a decade of experience at the highest level in European football, and this can only be a good thing in a squad of players that last season was so void of any leadership.
By the end of the summer, John Terry could be the only Chelsea player that has been there since the Abramovich era began. The impact of experience was clear to see when Didier Drogba was brought in and led the blues to the league in 2015; perhaps Ibrahimovic could offer something similar next season.
His goalscoring record
With a player like Zlatan Ibrahimovic you know exactly what you’re getting. Of course, his off the field antics have gotten him in to trouble in the past; but on the pitch there is nobody quite like him.
In the last 10 years, Zlatan has won the league title an incredible 9 times. With that in mind, a deal would seemingly guarantee a title challenge at the very least, and this is exactly what Chelsea need.
On top of that, his goal scoring record speaks for itself. In his final year in Paris, he scored 38 goals in just 30 games – a record that Lionel Messi would be proud of.
Where Zlatan goes, success normally follows – and this is something that Chelsea simply cannot avoid to miss out on.
Zlatan Under Mourinho
Now if Chelsea do miss out on Ibrahimovic, and he ends up at Old Trafford, the consequences for the Blues could be huge.
Perhaps the only striking partnership that could challenge Costa and Ibrahimovic would be Ibrahimovic, Martial and Rooney – a trio guaranteed to get you goals.
This combined with the appointment of Jose Mourinho, a manager who often brings immediate success; a Man United title challenge would be guaranteed.
Missing out on Ibrahimovic would be Chelsea’s loss; but it would be Manchester United’s gain – and that could have huge implications in the Premier League next season.
