When the news broke that Arsenal had paid the release cause in Jamie Vardy’s contract, the punters in the Transfer Tavern let out a collective “what?”
Whilst Arsenal were rumoured to be going after some of Europe’s best talent; they instead went for 29 year old English striker from Sheffield, who was playing non-league football just a few years ago.
Certainly, Vardy was unstoppable in the Premier League last season, but with news reports placing the bid at anywhere between £20 and £30 million; that is a lot of money to be talking about for a player that has really only had one season at the top.
Lots of names have been passed around here in the tavern as potential Arsenal striker targets over the weekend as people try to get their heads around this transfer.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
This experienced swede is at the top of most clubs wish lists this summer, and with good reason.
He has scored 113 goals in 122 games for PSG over the last few years, a goal scoring record that even Lionel Messi would be proud of.
He’s also a striker that, for the first time in his career, offers good value for money.
Whilst of course his wage demands would be stratospheric, the fact that he can move on a free transfer counteracts this cost somewhat.
What you’re getting with Ibrahimovic is a guaranteed goal in every single game, and that is something that money normally can’t buy.
If Arsenal could sign the swede they would not only be adding to their own cannon, but they would also be preventing some of their Premier League rivals from capturing the striker.
Gonzalo Higuain
Gonzalo Higuain is another striker that has been on fire over the past couple of years.
Having scored 35 goals in Serie A last season, and reportedly looking to move to a new club; Arsenal would struggle to find a better number nine this summer.
Another striker that would cost a decent sum of money; Higuain offers goals and experience at the highest level, and at only 28 years old, the best is yet to come from this Argentine star.
Edinson Cavani
Rounding out this lists choices of world-renowned super strikers; Edinson Cavani is a player that has seemingly been rumoured to join Arsenal for years.
Thus far it hasn’t happened, but with Cavani reportedly unhappy at PSG and looking for a club that challenges for the Champion’s League; he might just find his way to the Emirates this summer.
The Uruguyan striker has a goal scoring record averaging better than one goal in every two games; even whilst typically playing second fiddle on the wing to Ibrahimovic.
Cavani would guarantee you goals, and at 29 he is also just finding his best form.
Alvaro Morata
In Alvaro Morata you have a player that Arsenal have certainly had concrete interest in over the past several weeks.
He is different from the other names listed here in that he is just 23 years old, meaning that he is still yet to hit his peak.
This hasn’t stopped his goal scoring tally however, having netted nearly 30 times in just two years at Juventus.
Morata would certainly offer goals, and he certainly has age in his favour. If Arsenal are looking for a striker to lead the line for years to come; they could do no better than Alvaro Morata.
Loic Remy
Loic Remy doesn’t offer the same star-power as an Ibrahimovic or a Cavani, but what he does offer you is goals.
At Chelsea whilst largely playing as second or third choice striker, he popped up with some hugely important goals, netting 12 goals so far with the Blues.
He also wouldn’t mind playing second fiddle to Oliver Giroud, who will clear play as the primary striker under Wenger, who has placed so much trust in the Frenchman.
When you combine Remy’s role in the squad, his goal scoring record and his comparatively small price tag; he seems to tick all the boxes.
