Our Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are feeling as good about the future of the club as they have done for some time.
Indeed, the past couple of seasons under Roberto Martinez saw things get sour and stilted after initial positivity and so they are surely hoping Ronald Koeman’s tenure will be different.
It’s so far so good, then, with the club on course for European football next season and our landlord reckons if they achieve that the onus will then be on them to make that next step up.
To do so, signings will be needed in the summer and our landlord reckons the Dutch boss may have to take some risks in terms of who he brings in to help the club to the next level.
So, with that in mind, here are five transfer gambles Everton should take in the summer…
Martin Braithwaite
Braithwaite is a fascinating prospect playing for Toulouse over in France.
A powerful and strong forward he’s average a goal just over every other game and that kind of record cannot be sniffed at given he doesn’t play for the likes of PSG or Monaco. You’d think, then, at a club like Everton he’d score even more and there’s a very good case for him giving Romelu Lukaku a run for his money.
Daniele Rugani
Rugani is a top talent and so this only represents a gamble in the sense that he is young and has never played in this country.
He’s one of the finest young defenders around in Italy, though, but at Juventus he’s not really getting a look in with the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini around. He could be a brilliant acquisition for someone, though, providing he settles in quickly.
Emil Forsberg
Red Bull Leipzig have been one of the stories of the Bundesliga season – whether the people of Germany like that or not.
And, naturally, that means that plenty of their players have found the focus on them far more often than in previous seasons with Forsberg certainly falling into that bracket. The winger would give Everton another option out on the flanks with that a key part of how Koeman teams attack.
Elias Kachunga
This would be quite the risk given that Kachunga has been in the Championship of late but he has shown himself to be a good player.
Indeed, he’s been on loan with Huddersfield from Inglostadt and has hit double figures for the season for David Wagner’s swashbuckling Yorkshire outfit. He’ll fancy himself to make the step up and he really could be available at the end of the year.
Kieran Tierney
Everton have two cracking full-backs at the moment but they need to be on the look out for their replacements.
In that sense they particularly need to have an eye out for Leighton Baines’ heir with him coming towards the end of his career and our landlord reckons Tierney could be perfect. He’s a risk because he’s unproven at this level but he certainly has all the attributes to suggest that he would also do just fine.
