The opening of the January transfer window is now just three days away and Arsenal look set to be busy according to various reports.

The Gunners splashed cash in the summer on the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers but have struggled to mount any sort of serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Arsene Wenger has found himself under pressure during the opening half of the season with Gunners fans frustrated to see their side in the all too familiar position of having to fight for fourth spot in the second half of the campaign.

Despite the summers’ investment, Wenger failed to strengthen two key areas of his squad in particular. The Gunners failed to replace former captain Thomas Vermaelen at centre back whilst failing to land that elusive holding midfielder.

Yet some reports have linked the Gunners with a £50 million move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani – a strange one when you consider Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez in particular have all been firing this season.

Iker Casillas 

The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham currently boast top class goalkeepers and the feeling is that Wojciech Szczesny is not quite at the required level just yet.

Real Madrid signed Costa Rica’s World Cup hero Keylor Navas in the summer and have been consistently linked with a move for Manchester United’s David De Gea.

That would leave Spanish legend Iker Casillas surplus to requirements and Arsenal have been linked with a move. A proven world class goalkeeper for many years, Casillas could help to take the Gunners to the next level in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Morgan Schneiderlin 

The French international midfielder has been influential in Southampton’s rise to fourth spot in the Premier League despite having previously been keen to leave the club in the summer.

A big money offer and the lure of Champions League football this winter could prove too tempting for Schneiderlin to resist despite the Saints’ excellent campaign so far.

North London rivals Tottenham have been heavily linked also but the fact Schneiderlin would not be cup-tied for the Champions League could prove decisive in his decision.

Mats Hummels 

The German centre back has been a long-term target for Arsene Wenger and he may never get a better opportunity to sign him than this January, given Dortmund’s fall towards the foot of the Bundesliga.

Dortmund have a history of selling their best players in recent times and Arsenal are in desperate need of a world class centre back. Given the German contingent already at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal may hold the upper hand over their rivals in the race for his signature.

Julian Draxler 

Arsenal fans were disappointed to see the club miss out on a move for Julian Draxler on deadline day last January. The 21-year-old is one of the brightest young prospects in Europe and is still available for around £35 million.

With Mesut Ozil’s future in an Arsenal shirt uncertain, Draxler would make the ideal replacement whilst Wenger also sees the potential to turn him into a world class striker – the way in which he did with Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.

Again, the German contingent already at the club could play a part in Draxler opting for a switch to North London.

Winston Reid 

Given the Gunners’ injury crisis this season – particularly in the defensive positions – it would come as no surprise if Wenger attempted to sign two defenders this January.

West Ham United’s Winston Reid is another who has been instrumental in his side’s shock climb up the Premier League table and looks set to leave this January as he enters the final six months of his contract for a cut-price fee.

Given the lure of Champions League football and the fact he would not be cup-tied for Arsenal’s campaign in the second half of the season, this would be the ideal signing for Wenger.
