The Chelsea fans were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern last night after a dismal 3-0 defeat against Roma in the Champions League.
Chelsea found themselves behind after just 39 seconds in the match, and they never recovered from the early sucker punch. Pedro missed a half-decent chance after just 20 seconds of the game, but Roma quickly countered to begin the game in electric fashion. Edin Dzeko unintentionally knocked down a ball for Stephen El Shawaray to arrive ahead of Marcos Alonso and slam home Roma’s opener from the edge of the area. The Olimpico erupted following El Shawaray’s moment of brilliance and the tone was set the evening encounter.
The performance of Conte’s side was fittingly horrifying in moments during a Halloween fixture which underlined some serious defensive frailties in the current Chelsea squad. At the centre of midfield, Bakayoko and Fabregas struggled to get a foothold in an area of the pitch that was so assuringly dominated by Roma’s midfield generals De Rossi, Nainggolan and Strootman.
Meanwhile in Manchester, ex-Chelsea employee, Nemanja Matic was controlling the midfield for Manchester United. Matic’s performances for United this season have a handful of Chelsea fans ruing the clubs decision to allow the Serbian to leave this summer.
Phil Neville was full of criticism for the transfer policy at Chelsea in the aftermath of their defeat in Rome last night claiming it was the ‘poorest decision I’ve seen in the Premier League’.
However, Chelsea fans appear divided on the issue as a number of supporters believe injury to Kante is the real issue at the moment.
Here’s a few examples of the mixed reaction from Chelsea on Twitter…

No way. Kante , Bakayoko, Drinkwater. All more than adequate. Former injured and huge miss. Latter two injured and not had a pre-season.

Now so many @ChelseaFC fans now know the use of Nemanja Matic in our squad. But sorry it's too late to cry when the head is off… Bakayoko/Fabregas = Mayhem, Nightmare, Disaster. Etc #CFC #Deadpivotpair

Completely agree, bakayoko is not bad but can't compare with Matic. The servian is the real spider !

Honestly matic didn't do much at Chelsea last season. He was basically a passenger in that midfield. Kante is the GOAT

Selling him was a disaster, there can be no questioning that now. https://t.co/t7x4eRHvqK
