Our Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern are wondering what to make of the latest reports surrounding their star Belgian defender.

Toby Alderweireld has come back from injury and is now struggling to get a game back in the Spurs defence, as crazy as that would have sounded at the start of the campaign. Reports suggest that the Belgian could be on his way out of the club, and Daniel Levy is not one for giving up on an opportunity to cash in on a player in their prime.

However, many of the regulars in the back room believe it may be a smart move on Levy’s part to let the centre-back go in the summer.

Alderwerield seems to cut a frustrated figure at the moment after being left out of various squads and, despite all his excellence, perhaps the former Atletico Madrid stopper can now be seen as expendable. Yes, Tottenham really are that good these days.

Injury Prone

The Belgian has missed a large chunk of this season through injury with a reoccurrence of a hamstring, and with his many injuries over the years in and around his thighs. As the years go on, the injuries usually reoccur which could lead to more time on the sideline.

Approaching 30 and with his contract coming to an end, summer could be the perfect time to sell the Belgian defender on.

Competition for Places

Following his comeback from injury, Alderweireld has struggled to regain his spot in the first team due to the form of Jan Vertonghen and Davison Sanchez. Many of the fans in the pool room believe that if this defensive partnership continues to flourish, then the Belgian’s days at Spurs look numbered.

Unless an injury or suspension give him the opportunity to re-establish himself in the team, Alderweireld may have to warm the bench for the rest of the season.
