Even though he’s done little to justify the hype since his summer 2015 move to Newcastle from Anderlecht, Aleksandar Mitrovic remains a figure that many fans still have some love for.
The Serbian is a headline-grabber with a spiky edge and while he is often a bit of a liability in terms of being prone to red cards, he’s a character – the Tyneside club have shown in the past that they love a maverick talent, which the 22-year-old certainly is.
So reports from the Chronicle that Newcastle are keen to keep Mitrovic should have been welcomed with open arms, right? Well, that hasn’t been the case, with a big chunk of the Toon’s support either wishing to see him leave or sceptical about his chances of making it if he does indeed stay at St James’ Park.
With the story being discussed at length over by a portrait of Alan Shearer here in the Transfer Tavern, our landlord has been on Twitter to track down some of the best takes on the situation…
@lee_ryder most overrated member in our squad. Another Rivière. Keep up the great work Graham Carr.

@ChronicleNUFC @lee_ryder I wouldn’t lose any sleep if mitro was moved on. Has had opportunities this season but doesn’t produce

‘Newcastle still see Mitrovic as a young player & one that they can develop further next season’ – hard to develop when he’ll be 3rd choice https://t.co/MCcoOZJEkv

@MsiDouglas @StephNUFC Mitrovic has had a long time to show his potential. Very surprised that they want to keep him.

@StephNUFC Murphy must be a likely one to go. Surprising about Mitro but he does have potential
— Mark Douglas (@MsiDouglas) 15 March 2017
However, there are some out there who believe he’s worth persevering with…
Fair play to Lee Ryder. That’s a big story, if it does turn out to be true. I’m glad as well. Still feel Mitro can make it in England #NUFC

@ChronicleNUFC @lee_ryder we need someone of better quality to play behind mitro. Some one who can score goals and give him more space.
