The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern still can’t believe that their dynamic livewire winger, Leroy Sane, isn’t at the World Cup. The German winger scored 14 goals and assisted a further 17 for The Etihad faithful this season yet was ultimately overlooked for the German World Cup squad, with Joachim Low left looking silly as Die Mannschaft lost their opener 1-0 to Mexico.

The Manchester City fans propping our bar would have all been Mexico fans for those 90 minutes if it wasn’t for the fact their impressive midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan, wasn’t in the squad. Either way the fans would have all had a wry smile on their faces as Hirving Lozano fired past Manuel Neuer to inflict a first World Cup defeat since July 2010 when they were beaten 1-0 in the semi-finals by eventual champions Spain.
Unfortunately for Germany, history looks to be repeating itself as the last three European winners of the tournament have all been eliminated at the group stages at the next tournament. The Germans will be trying to avoid that fate but without Sane, they could struggle. The side lacks a cutting edge, despite having some of the world’s best build-up play, something that the City winger offers in abundance. If Germany do find themselves facing an early exit it will be a tournament of what-ifs for whether Sane would have had the required impact.
