The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are already thinking about next summer…
It was a poor few months that preceded the start of the 2017/18 season, and the action on the pitch certainly hasn’t been any better.
With just one win in three, Arsenal are in a very bad way, and they must do all they can to avoid a sustained period of regression.
In truth, given the improvements made to some of their title rivals – and the poor start to the season that the Gunners have made, this season is already looking like a write-off – and so it makes sense to place some focus on what is going to be happening at the end of the season.
A few major contracts are expiring, notably Ozil, Sanchez and Cech, and they must be sorted out – but it appears as though the Gunners are also considering incomings.
According to the Telegraph, one player that could ‘realistically’ move to the Emirates is Raheem Sterling. Touted with an interest in him over the summer, there is said to be a feeling that he could leave Man City next summer – and it is Arsenal, alongside Chelsea, who are said to be most likely to pounce. Any deal, though, will not be easy to find – with Man City likely reluctant to let him leave particularly for a decent price.
Sterling has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, and whilst he may not be the biggest name at the Etihad, he is without doubt one of the best on his day.
At 22-years-old, the best is yet to come from the Englishman, and Arsenal would certainly be able to benefit should he arrive. He’d drastically improve their options going forward, perhaps taking the weight currently on the shoulders of Sanchez away.
Landlord’s Verdict
With Alexis Sanchez still on course to leave the club next summer, Sterling would be a natural replacement. Bringing the dribbling, goals and assists that the Chilean does, Sterling would be a massive signing.
He’s also an established star, and Arsenal have in recent years been hesitant to invest in players of that ilk.
That said, if Arsenal are going to rebuild, they need big names. If he’s available, they simply must go for him.
