Sokratis Papastathopoulos has struggled to feature under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal of late, and with the upcoming transfer window approaching, the defender is now being linked with a move away from the club.
According to The Independent, Sven Mislintat, who is Arsenal’s former head of recruitment, is now the sporting director at German side Stuttgart and he is looking to see if he can acquire some players from the Gunners.
Sokratis, who has just one year remaining on his contract, is a target for the German side who got promoted to the Bundesliga this season. Mislintat brought the 32-year-old to the Emirates from Borussia Dortmund in 2018, however, the Greek’s wages could make an agreement problematic.
The Greek centre-back has played 68 times in all competitions for the club since he joined, per Transfermarkt, including 19 appearances in the Premier League this season. However he has only made one appearance since the 18th January due to a combination of injury and also Mikel Arteta not fancying the defender over his other options in the squad.
With only a year left on his contract and the manager not selecting him, it would be good for the club to sell the defender so that they can use the money they raise on players they will use more. Currently Sokratis is valued at £13.05 million on Transfermarkt, so they could be able to get a fair amount if they sold him.
