The future of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been abundantly reported in the media lately as he only has one year left on his contract, and the delay in him signing a new deal has prompted speculation that he could leave the club.
The Gunners will not want their captain to leave, as he has been on fire for the club this season, scoring 20 goals in his 35 Premier League appearances (via WhoScored); and even at the age of 31 he is still performing consistently for Mikel Arteta’s side. His 66 goals in 107 appearances for Arsenal highlight how good he has been for the club, per Transfermarkt.
Even though they will not want him to leave, the north London side should have targets in mind with whom they could replace the Gabon forward if he does depart, and former Liverpool player John Barnes has given his opinion on who would be a good replacement for Aubameyang.
Speaking to BonusCodeBets. via Metro, Barnes said: “Odsonne Edouard is the top striker in Scotland and if Aubameyang was to leave Arsenal, then they will be looking at Edouard’s situation.
“However, if Aubameyang stays, then I don’t see him coming. I think if you look at any of the top players in Scotland that they could come down to England and be a success.
“He’s doing very well at the moment and could make the step up to the Premier League if he gets a move that’s right for him and works for how he plays.”
It’s hard to disagree with Barnes here, as Edouard could be a great option for Arsenal. Since joining Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain, the Frenchman has had a terrific spell in Scotland and, at the age of just 22, he has scored 60 goals in 126 appearances, per Transfermarkt.
This is a great record and his 22 goals in the Scottish Premiership in 2019/20 saw him average one every 96 minutes, via BBC Sport. This was crucial to the Hoops winning their ninth title in a row and emphasises just how potent Edouard has been.
He also has a winning mentality from lifting numerous trophies with Celtic and has scored 11 goals in Europe (via the Europa League as well as the Champions League qualifiers, per Transfermarkt) in 29 appearances, so he could be a reliable replacement for Aubameyang if the Gunners need to find one in the near future.
