Chelsea are now worried that star midfielder N’Golo Kante could end up joining Arsenal upon the expiry of his contract, according to reports.
The Lowdown: Arteta exciting…
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has guided his side to top of the Premier League table, losing just one in ten matches whilst instilling hope in supporters that a first title win in 19 years could be possible.
Arsenal, under the leadership of Pep Guardiola’s former pupil, have played scintillating, attack-minded football with real intensity and guile in the final third.
There have been many star performers, perhaps most notably Granit Xhaka, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba and Bukayo Saka.
Yet, despite their abundance of quality, Arsenal chiefs – lead by sporting director Edu – have been reported to be making transfer plans behind-the-scenes.
The Latest: Chelsea hold Kante to Arsenal worry…
According to 90min, it now appears two-time Champions League winners Chelsea hold a worry over big name midfielder Kante.
The £290,000-per-week star has now entered the final year of his deal at Stamford Bridge and could leave on a free transfer next summer.
Chelsea are willing to offer him a new deal but Kante is allegedly demanding big wages, perhaps stalling the prospect of a mutual agreement.
The Blues, however, hold a ‘fear’ over their midfield engine – namely where he could end up.
This is where Arsenal come in, as it’s claimed they hold an interest alongside Tottenham, and Chelsea ‘do not want to see’ Kante make a move to the Emirates Stadium or Spurs.
The Verdict: Hold out?
Signing the Frenchman for nothing in 2023 would undoubtedly be a coup for Arsenal and Edu.
Regardless of his age, the 31-year-old can still prove to be an efficient dictator in front of the back four – averaging more tackles per 90 than any Chelsea regular last season (WhoScored).
He is a big game player and will undoubtedly come as one of the most sought-after free agents next year, if he doesn’t sign a new deal.
