Much was made over the summer of Arsenal’s proposed defensive rebuild, with Arsene Wenger keen to reinforce a defence that struggled towards the end of last season.
Recent signing Gabriel was not looking up to par, whilst the lack of mobility provided by Mertesacker was proving to be to Arsenal’s detriment.
As a result, the Gunners finally managed to land German defender Shkodran Mustafi after a long summer pursuit; but it would appear that Wenger is still not content.
According to Sport, Arsenal are in a race that includes the likes of Barcelona for Roma central defender Kostas Manolas.
The Greek centre-half was linked with a Roma departure over the summer, and Wenger seemingly see’s the him as the perfect replacement for Mertesacker, who has been linked with a move away.
They add that whilst their interest in Manolas waned following the capture of Mustafi, the potential departure of Mertesacker has reinvigorated their interest.
A 25-year-old defender, Manolas has cemented himself as a key part of Roma’s first team setup, and he has already acquired 8 league appearances so far this season.
A defender that is particularly proficient in the air, Manolas is also good with his feet – and he could be the perfect man to partner either Koscielny or Mustafi going forward.
