It’s been a tough few weeks for the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern…
Having suffered two defeats in their opening three games, Arsene Wenger has had a very tough start to the new campaign, and it’s showing no signs of improving.
In truth, it’s the worst start to the season that our landlord has seen from an Arsenal side in a very long time, and it’s not just the poor results – it’s the manner of the defeats too.
On the bright side, it’s still early doors and there is time to steady the ship, but clearly there is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes.
One problem that the Gunners are facing surrounds the uncertain future that so many of their players are facing. Much has been made of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s contracts in recent weeks, but often forgotten is the fact that key players like Danny Welbeck and Petr Cech could also be available on a free next summer.
This is a big problem, but significantly, it’s a problem that the Gunners are keen to resolve. According to the Telegraph, Arsenal have big plans to try and turn their ship around – with contract talks set to take place between now and the end of the year with some of their most important players.
In an effort to not only ensure the future of the club, Arsenal are obviously keen not to lose any big name players on a free, whilst they will also be keen to prevent being forced to sell – like in the case of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It will be no easy feat for the Gunners, but at least the effort is being made.
Landlord’s Verdict
This is a positive step from Arsenal, but the real question they need to ask themselves is why would a player want to tie themselves down at the Emirates?
In truth, it’s looking very much like the Gunners are on course for a poor spell, and with the prospect of losing Ozil and Sanchez on the horizon, that seems unlikely to change.
Still, Wenger often has his ways, and perhaps a form turnaround could make things better.
