There was only one name on the lips of the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern on deadline day: Alexis Sanchez…
Rumours were surrounding the Chilean all day long amidst supposed interest from Man City. In the end, the deal didn’t happen – but should Arsenal have given in and moved him on?
Arsenal are in a tough spot now given that a new deal for the Chilean looks off the table. He is said to be angry at the club for blocking the deal, and with just a year left on his contract, it’s not a wild suggestion to say that he may look to run the rest of his contract down. That, of course, will see Arsenal out of pocket massively – and when you consider that Man City offered the Gunners £60 million for his signature – that quickly becomes a massive loss.
If Sanchez doesn’t want to play for the club, that also means a few things. Firstly, it’ll mean that he won’t be at his best if he does play – and that can only be bad for Arsenal. His negative mood could also bring the general mood in the camp down – and that’s the last thing the Gunners need.
In truth, this season is beginning to look like a write-off already. The Gunners are struggling, and a lack of business has left them in a very bad spot. The best they can hope for is a cup run and a potential top four finish. They should have wiped their hands with Sanchez and started fresh.
