Gianluigi Buffon could be on the verge of making a shock move to the Premiership, after negotiations with Juventus over a new contract hit a stumbling block. The news has placed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on alert, as he looks for an answer to the goalkeeping problem which has plagued the Gunners this season.
Buffon told Juventus that he wanted an improved salary, but club officials are apparently trying to convince the 33 year old to take a pay-cut. The ‘keeper is reportedly earning somewhere in the region of £6 million a year, and with their financial problems Juventus are considering selling him to lower their wage bill.
Arsenal are first in line to swoop for Buffon, as Wenger tries to recruit some big-name signings in readiness for next season’s campaign. If the Gunners were to move for Buffon, it’s being suggested that Robin Van Persie could be used as part of the deal.
Gianluigi is also a target for Serie A club Roma, but it’s thought the player is reluctant to move to another Italian club, especially a rival of Juve’s. His family are supposedly keen on a move to North London. Of course they are! Why would you want the Trevi Fountain, The Colliseum, The Spanish Steps or the Vatican when you could have Camden High Street and Hampstead Heath?
33 year old Buffon has been at Juventus since 2000, winning practically every honour in the game and making over 250 appearances for ‘The Old Lady.’ He’s also won a World Cup with Italy and has collected over 100 caps for the Azzuri along the way.
