Aston Villa: Club set for talks to sign Alexander Sorloth

According to Aksam (via Sport Witness), Aston Villa are looking to open talks with Trabzonspor for Crystal Palace-owned striker Alexander Sorloth, with the Turkish club having the option to buy him permanently.

Sorloth is currently on loan at Trabzonspor and is having a bit of a revival there, explaining the reported interest from Villa, who are said to be willing to pay £15m for his services.

Indeed, having scored 16 goals in 20 Super Lig appearances this season, Sorloth is enjoying his time in Turkey. Still, you cannot help but think that Villa would be taking a huge gamble by splashing out £15m on him.

The 24-year-old has really struggled in the Premier League, failing to score in any of his 16 appearances for Palace, albeit most of those were substitute appearances. Still, he failed to make much of an impact for Roy Hodgson’s side, averaging just 0.3 shots and 0.2 dribbles per game last term (via WhoScored).

Those numbers are vastly inferior to the averages of Keinan Davis, one of Villa’s current substitute strikers. In seven appearances from the bench this season, Davis has averaged one shot and 0.9 dribbles per game.

Furthermore, perhaps Davis is a better option for Dean Smith in this division. As well as that, the Villa boss also has Wesley to return and only recently signed Mbwana Samatta from Genk.

Considering all of that, especially at £15m, is Sorloth really the kind of player the Villans should be looking at right now? The answer is probably no.
