Gregg Evans of The Athletic believes Aston Villa midfielder Danny Drinkwater could have just one more game to convince manager Dean Smith.
The 29-year-old joined the Midlands club on loan from Chelsea last month, but he has struggled to make much of an impression. And following a lacklustre showing in the 3-2 defeat to Tottenham, Evans has suggested that he could be running out of time to prove himself at Villa Park.
Speaking on the 1874 podcast (20/02/2020), Evans said: “Clearly, Dean Smith wants to give Drinkwater a go, doesn’t he? He’s obviously seen something in him, either in training or in his previous performances for other teams, that he wants to get out of him. I think maybe he’s got one more game.
“He’s got probably one more game to show what he’s about. If he doesn’t, then maybe there might be a change there.”
Smith could very well be seeing something positive in training but, in games, he is not getting much from the 2015/16 Premier League title winner. As already mentioned, he was far from his best against Tottenham.
During that 3-2 defeat, Drinkwater won just one of the four tackles he attempted and was dribbled past three times as he went on to earn a 6.2 match rating on WhoScored. There is still time to turn things around but, as things stand, this experiment has failed so far.
