Many Aston Villa have been debating who they think should start as number one this season out of Tom Heaton and new signing Emiliano Martinez.
Claret and Blue boss Dean Smith has struggled to find a consistent ‘keeper this since returning to the Premier League.
Heaton, who arrived from Burnley in the summer of 2019, did start the 2019/20 season as first choice stopper but an injury suffered against his former club midway through last term saw Smith frantically look for a back-up.
Orjan Nyland and Pepe Reina shared the number one spot with the latter coming in on loan from AC Milan and playing an important role in the club’s successful battle against relegation.
Who starts in goal when everyone is fit? Martinez or Heaton?

With the new season now underway, Villa will open up their Premier League account with a fixture against Sheffield United (21/09) and a debate has now begun over who will start in between the sticks for that opening fixture.
Heaton, who is edging closer to full fitness, has been joined by new signing Emi Martinez, who was announced at Villa after a successful negotiation with Arsenal earlier this week.

Hard to tell.
We don’t know how Heaton will come back from his injury. It’s a big injury for any footballer to have, let alone someone moving more towards the end of their career

Martinez place for Heaton to reclaim, Heaton had to wait to reclaim his position the first time Pope took his place through injury
