Aston Villa failed to capitalise on the opportunity to move further away from the relegation zone after falling to a 3-2 defeat at home against Tottenham.
It looked like it would be Villa’s day after they fortunately took the lead early on when Toby Alderweireld knocked the ball past Hugo Lloris, but the home side couldn’t maintain their advantage. To Spurs’ credit, they looked lively throughout with a pacy front-three, but Dean Smith’s side never really imposed themselves on the match despite having 55% possession.
One of the reasons for that was the midfield battle, with a number of Villa fans pointing Danny Drinkwater out as the weak link in the team. One supporter even called him a “waste of space” in a brutal assessment. The on-loan Chelsea man has had mixed success in his four league appearances since arriving in January.

His debut was the 6-1 defeat by Manchester City but he picked up points in his next games against Brighton and Watford. However, Villa have a number of midfielders to choose from and Drinkwater has the lowest WhoScored average rating of any player in the squad, so it is easy to see why fans are frustrated with him playing.
