Many Aston Villa fans were less than impressed with Matt Targett’s performance yesterday in the Carabao Cup final.
Villa lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the Wembley final despite a battling second-half performance. But despite another expected cup success for the Citizens in sky blue, some Villa fans were laying the blame at Matt Targett’s door.
The left-back who scored one goal in a man of the match performance to get Aston Villa to the final in the first place, turned in a poor showing yesterday with a rating of just 6.2, providing one meagre tackle and aerial win throughout the 90 minutes (WhoScored).
Many Villans also picked out his frailty in preventing Man City’s first goal when Targett allowed Phil Foden in behind him to set up Aguero’s opener.
Targett’s performance did pick up in the second half, as did Aston Villa’s in general but these fans were not ready to forgive a mistake that led to a huge opportunity missed.
Here are some of their thoughts, as one quite simply said he ‘can’t defend’…
Targett made Foden look like Messi today. Didn’t get anywhere near tight enough #AVFC

Is Matt Targett on the pitch because we literally aren't covering that left hand side #AVFC
