You’d be forgiven if you might have thought a couple of years back that Glenn Whelan was reaching the end of his career. At 35-years-old it didn’t look as though there was much left in the game for the midfielder, yet his recent performances are proving that to be false, as he’s continued to shine in the Villa Park midfield.

Yesterday was yet another example of that too, as the Irishman shone throughout from his defensive midfield base. At times, the role that Whelan plays isn’t the most glamorous in the footballing world, but the way that he does the donkey work for the likes of Jack Grealish and co further up the field to work is to be commended, and you really can’t knock him for his last few outings.
Should Whelan keep doing what he’s doing and carry on playing the role of the water carrier at the base of Dean Smith’s midfield to the level he’s doing so now, there really is no reason why the Villains can’t continue their charge towards a top six place. Currently sitting 5th, Whelan and co have a great chance to make the playoffs, and they’ll be praying for some luck along the way as the teams below them have games in hand.

The Villains cannot believe how good their midfield enforcer is proving to be and will be desperate for him to keep his levels up until the end of the season.
