Aston Villa fans in the Tavern might be tempted to rise for a drunken salute after club director General Charles Krulak stated that the Midlands club can draw from his military experiences with the US Marines to help avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Remi Garde’s side are currently languishing in bottom place of the league table, 11 points adrift of safety, and are yet to win a league match under the Frenchman following Tim Sherwood’s sacking back in October.
But the 73-year old Krulak, a veteran from the Vietnam War, remains confident that Villa can fight their way out of the relegation battle, insisting the Villans need just three wins to get ‘back in the mix.’
Krulak, a dependable ally of Villa owner Randy Lerner, referred to his experience as a commander in the first Gulf War in an attempt to prove that anything is possible. He told SunSport:
“I faced way bigger ‘losing battles’ than this – and won them. You can’t tell me this is impossible. Three wins in a row and we are back in the mix. That’s what Randy believes and what everyone at the Villa believes. The day you don’t believe is the day you quit.”
“Let’s just look at Desert Storm. It was 4am and we were standing next to minefields separating Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. There were trenches filled with gas, massive artillery ready to rain down on us and the threat of chemical attack.
“My next in command looked at me and said, “‘How are we gonna get through this?'” ‘I said, “We’re gonna do it, we’re gonna go through this like a knife through butter'”.
