Aston Villa could be preparing for life after Emiliano Martinez as uncertainty continues to surround the Argentine’s long-term future at Villa Park.
The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has become one of the club’s most influential players since arriving from Arsenal back in 2020, developing into one of the Premier League’s standout shot-stoppers under Unai Emery.
Martinez has made more than 250 appearances for Villa across all competitions and played a huge role in the club’s rise back towards the top end of English football.
However, after strong transfer interest last summer and continued speculation ahead of another window, Villa are now believed to be assessing possible replacements should the 33-year-old move on.
Aston Villa Eye Two Ligue 1 Goalkeepers
According to Foot Mercato, Aston Villa are monitoring both Robin Risser and Guillaume Restes as potential successors to Martinez.
Risser has enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 with RC Lens after arriving from Strasbourg, quickly establishing himself as one of the division’s most impressive young goalkeepers.
The French youth international has attracted widespread attention thanks to a string of standout performances, recording 10 clean sheets while emerging as a regular name on the radar of Didier Deschamps’ France setup.
Villa are understood to admire the 21-year-old, although Lens are reportedly reluctant to sanction a sale unless a major offer arrives.
Guillaume Restes is viewed as another serious option. The Toulouse goalkeeper already boasts significant senior experience despite still being only 21, having racked up close to 100 Ligue 1 appearances.
The Olympic silver medallist is highly rated across Europe and is considered a more realistic target financially, with Villa believing a deal could prove easier to complete than a move for Risser.
Should Martinez remain at Villa Park, interest may not progress further, but it appears the Midlands club are already making contingency plans in case one of their most important players heads for the exit this summer.
