Aston Villa have been linked with yet another goalkeeper, with their attention now turning to Italian stopper Mattia Perin, according to Calciomercato, via Sport Witness.
The Juventus ‘keeper was set to join Benfica, though that move didn’t come to fruition after he failed a medical, as reported by Goal.
Benfica had been willing to pay €15 million (£13.4m) for the 26-year-old, which is the fee Juventus are expecting Villa to match if a transfer is to be made.
Before his latest injury, which was sustained in April, Perin has spent a total of 449 days out since the beginning of the 2015/16 season – with injuries including two cruciate ligament ruptures and three shoulder injuries.
His latest injury is to his shoulder and he is not expected to return to action until mid-November.
Perin managed just nine Serie A matches last season, partly due to competition from Wojciech Szczesny, though injuries did also play a part in that low number.
With Villa looking for somebody to be their main goalkeeper, this will be of concern, as it doesn’t indicate he will be able to play the entire season for them, meaning they would likely need to rely on Jed Steer for periods of the campaign.
Considering his injury record, it would be a big risk for Aston Villa to make a move for Perin.
As is especially the case with a goalkeeper, Villa surely need somebody they can rely on throughout the season’s entirety and Perin’s record last campaign doesn’t offer the indication he is that man.
