Former Villa and Scotland defender Alan Hutton has been discussing one issue that his former club may have this season.
Hutton’s comments on Villa’s main problem
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I did look at the bench when they were 3-0 down and I was thinking: ‘There’s not many options there, other than Keinan Davis there, that would come on and change a game.’
“I think the starting XI is very strong but maybe that’s the side that needs strengthening. It’s Traore or Trezeguet, that’s your main substitution to change it – or Keinan Davis.
“After that, you’re kind of light, it’s very defensive so it’s maybe an area he’s going to have to look to sort out.”
Is this a big issue for Aston Villa?
Summer signing Bertrand Traore had to come off in the 29th minute due to an injury against the Saints, which perhaps highlighted how little quality Dean Smith’s side currently has past the first eleven when it comes to attacking options.
It might be too early to judge him, but Traore has failed to set the world alight so far. The 25-year-old has managed on average, 0.6 shots per game, and 0.4 successful dribbles (WhoScored).
If Villa want to be a team battling more for a mid-table place than in a relegation battle like last season, then they need to improve their whole squad and not just the starting eleven.
Hopefully, they can add some depth in the winter transfer window, but they will definitely be hoping that injured players like Traore can return sooner rather than late so they have as many options available as possible.
In other Villa news, fans of the club were disappointed with one key man following the Saints loss. Find out who here!
