Aston Villa fans got to see their captain Jack Grealish play competitively for England for the first time as the midfielder was finally given a start in the Nations League clash against Belgium.
The Villa captain impressed
The result in the game sadly didn’t go England’s way as they lost 2-0. However, many viewers were quick to praise the performance of Grealish and he picked up the second-best rating out of the Three Lions squad.
England manager Gareth Southgate, who Villa fans have not been too happy with lately, heaped praise on the 25-year-old. He said: “I think we took the ball in tight areas. His technique was good, he took the players out of the game. He bought a lot of free kicks. I thought he was exceptional, he should be delighted with the way he played.”
Not all felt this way about Grealish
Despite such praise, Danny Mills did not feel the same way. He commented on a post about the Villa captain on Instagram to make his opinion known. Mills said: ‘What’s his role in the team? Did he score? Did he get an assist? Did he test the keeper? Sounds like the best-attacking midfielder on the planet’
The fact that he won 11 ground duels, completed four successful dribbles and made two key passes (SofaScore), emphasises that he did a lot on the pitch, so comments like the one made by Mills seem surprising.
Grealish should take this criticism and use it to fuel his performances so that he can continue to prove any doubters wrong. He has definitely shone this campaign as he now has five goals and seven assists in his eleven appearances for both club and country (Transfermarkt).
