Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has admitted that striker Ollie Watkins has surpassed his expectations with his “unbelievable” attitude.
Watkins stole the show after his side demolished reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 7-2 and scored a memorable hat-trick in the process.
Villa sat fourth in the Premier League before this weekend’s round of matches and have only conceded five goals during the current campaign, a complete contrast to the team which only just avoided relegation last season.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Smith was stunned by what he has seen from Watkins since he arrived and believes that he has picked up pointers as a coach by watching him play.
“Unbelievable attitude as a player”, the manager said. “He just wants to get better.
“He tests you as a coach himself because one of the former questions he asked me was how will you get me into the England squad? That’s his ambition and I love it when the people have got them targets and the hunger to get there.”
Watkins have already taken Villa Park by storm and has not even featured 10 times in the claret and blue as of yet. The Englishman is continuing his rich run of form which he was producing for his previous club, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists from 143 appearances for the Bees (TransferMarkt) and being hailed by his former coach Thomas Frank as “amazing”.
We are only a few games into the season and Watkins has already been thoroughly impressive, which begs the question regarding what else he can bring to the table right up until the end of the campaign.
If he keeps up everything that has pleased Smith, there is no reason why he could not be in with a shout of picking up this year’s Golden Boot.
