Aston Villa journalist Joseph Chapman has talked up Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos as a potential transfer target.

The lowdown

Steven Gerrard has swapped Ibrox for Villa Park and, theoretically, he might look to bring in a couple of familiar faces from north of the border.

Significantly, £10.8million-rated hitman Morelos is only contracted to the Gers for one more full season.

The Colombian has scored seven goals in 20 appearances so far this season, and 101 in 202 overall for the club - one every other game (via Transfermarkt).

Villa, though, have made big-money additions to the striking ranks in successive years now, buying Danny Ings for £26.48million last summer and Ollie Watkins for £30.6million 12 months prior.

The latest

The Birmingham Mail's Chapman writes that the 'regularity' with which Morelos scores is 'frightening'.

And he thinks there's a 'very strong argument' that he'll only get better given that he's just 25 years old.

Villa may already have Ings and Watkins on their books, but Chapman feels Morelos 'could complement' the duo.

The verdict

Another key point here is Rangers' financial situation. They may have little choice but to sell one of their star players like Morelos.

Sky Sports journalist Andrew Dickson says this might be the 'easiest way' to address their financial needs, though the situation isn't so bad that they'd simply accept the first offer that arrives.

Signing Morelos, who was hailed as 'excellent' by Fabio Capello, would give Villa and Gerrard some pretty enviable depth at the sharp end.
