Aston Villa: Mikel Arteta speaks highly of Douglas Luiz - Aston Villa News

Aston Villa face Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend. Dean Smith’s side will be hoping to put the past two defeats behind them.

Previous to those setbacks, the Villains thrashed Liverpool 7-2, showing that they are able to compete against the big sides. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been praising his opponents, and in particular Douglas Luiz.

What Arteta had to say about Luiz

Speaking via the Arsenal website, Arteta said: ‘They got Emi, they got a striker, they got Ross and Douglas Luiz who is a player who is starting to show us he is capable. He is a player that I know really well from my time and City and I think the time is benefiting them together. You can see what they are trying to do and they look really strong.’

Is Luiz key to the Aston Villa side?

Speaking towards the end of last season post lockdown, Dean Smith heaped praised on the midfielder as he said: ‘Douglas has been unbelievable since we’ve come back.’

The Brazilian moved from Manchester City in the summer of 2019 and is a key name on the team sheet.  He is key at breaking up opposition attacks for Smith and he has shown this in the current campaign. The 22 year-old has managed on average 1.2 tackles and 1.7 interceptions a game this season (WhoScored). A player like this is crucial for the likes of Jack Grealish to flourish further forward.

With Arteta’s time at Manchester City, he knows a lot about Luiz. The fact he is appreciating his impact in the Villa side highlights that he is achieving the potential that got him involved at the Manchester club in the first place.
