Aston Villa: Paul Robinson raves about Emiliano Martinez

Aston Villa: Paul Robinson raves about Emiliano Martinez - Aston Villa

Aston Villa are having a very impressive campaign and pundit Paul Robinson has picked out the performance of one player, in particular, who he thinks has shone this season.

Robinson raves over Emiliano Martinez

The former Premier League goalkeeper was very impressed with the former Arsenal star against his old club as he told Football Insider:

“To bounce back from the West Ham game like that shows that he is a top, top goalkeeper. He has done exceptionally well this season but he was particularly poor against West Ham last week. He should have saved the two (Jesse) Lingard goals.”

“To keep a clean sheet against Arsenal, his former club, just a few days later will have absolutely delighted him. I rate Tom Heaton as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. I rate him really, really highly. Now that he is back fit, Martinez has got real competition but the way he is playing, Tom has a big challenge getting back into that team.”

“Martinez’s distribution and handling is excellent. Arsenal crowded the box on a number of occasions on Saturday and I think Mikel Arteta saw him as weak in that area. They must’ve thought he was weak in that area but he came out and took the crosses. He looked strong. He was not fazed by it. I think the West Ham performance was just one-off game in an otherwise outstanding season.”

Martinez has been a huge success

The former Arsenal shot-stopper has been a stand-out performer for the club since signing in the summer and has received a lot of praise. Pundit Michael Brown said: “He’s going so well, he’s got that confidence and it just looks like a brilliant signing.”

Indeed his stats before the game against West Ham show why he has been a “brilliant signing”. In his 21 appearances this season, he has made 75 saves and kept eleven clean sheets (Premier League) – this is the second most clean sheets in the division.

This emphasises that he is a crucial reason as to why the club have hopes of qualifying for a European spot and to have such a solid player in goal will be a huge morale booster and confidence lifter for the rest of the squad.

He is only 28 years-old and day-by-day, as Robinson states, his signing is looking more and more like a great coup for Villa.
