Aston Villa and Tottenham could do battle again this summer in the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal as a free agent, Calciomercato report.

The Lowdown: Vidal’s contract situation

Vidal, now 34, has spent 18 months with Inter Milan and has made 54 appearances.

He is out of contract at the San Siro at the end of the season, although Inter Milan do have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

However, recent reports have labelled it a certainty he will leave Italy in the summer. He is thought to be tempted over a move to England specifically, having already played in Italy, Germany and Spain, and it seems as if Villa Park could be a possible destination for the South American.

The Latest: Villa interest

According to Calciomercato, Villa and Tottenham are both closely following Vidal ahead of a possible summer switch.

Marseille and Galatasaray have also been name-checked, with all four looking to ‘snatch’ the Chile international from Inter Milan.

The Verdict: Lange to get his own back?

Villa were looking to bring in a midfielder in January and made a bid for Rodrigo Bentancur. However, as we know, Bentancur ended up joining Tottenham instead, so Villa and Johan Lange are perhaps plotting their revenge on Spurs by pipping them to Vidal.

You could argue there would be question marks over a possible move to the Midlands, though, with Vidal seemingly in the twilight stages of his career.

Indeed, he has made just one Serie A start this season and despite being labelled a ‘monster’ by European football commentator Andy West, he is on a whopping £110,000-a-week - it's hard to see that number dropping if he has clubs queuing up to sign him as a free agent.

Villa could certainly do with a new midfielder, and although Vidal may be available for no initial fee, the club could be better off looking elsewhere with a long-term view in mind.
