Aston Villa are reportedly trying to decide whether they will allow midfielder Conor Hourihane to leave the club this month.
The latest on Hourihane
According to Football Insider, Villa are weighing up their options as they try to decide it they’ll let Hourihane leave this month. If the club do allow this to happen, it would, reportedly, most likely be on loan.
Should Villa let him depart?
The £5.4m-valued player has, at time, been a star during his time at Villa. He was integral during the season which saw the club get promoted to the Premier League (Transfermarkt). He also played 27 times in England’s top flight last season and has international appearances to his name to boot.
However, it has been a struggle for Hourihane in 2020/21, especially with Ross Barkley arriving on loan from Chelsea in the summer. He has only featured four times so far, playing 228 minutes of Premier League football. Therefore, it is understandable to see why his future at Villa Park is being discussed.
The Athletic’s Dan Bardell was full of praise for the player in July, as he said: “Whether you rate Conor whether you don’t, and obviously we’re two people that rate him highly, you can’t deny that when he’s on the pitch, we’ve looked better this season. And he’s a weapon from set pieces.”
It is always great to have an asset that can execute a key area of the game, like set pieces, very well, as those players can be crucial in helping win games.
In these his four appearances this season, Hourihane has managed to grab himself a goal and an assist, (Transfermarkt), which shows that he still has something to give at the club. It might be wise if Dean Smith kept him to make sure he still has enough quality squad depth in the middle of the pitch, but it remains to be seen if that will be the case.
