Ross Barkley is having a decent season whilst on loan at Aston Villa, and a report has now revealed the price tag that Villa will have to pay if they want to sign him permanently.
The latest on Barkley
According to 90 min, via Birmingham Live, Villa want to sign the Englishman on a permanent deal as they push to become a side consistently battling for Europe. However, it might be hard for them as Chelsea will apparently ask for a fee in the region of £40m for the playmaker.
Should Villa splash the cash?
The summer loan signing has had a good campaign as he has managed, on average, 2.4 shots, two key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per game (WhoScored). He has also scored three goals and provided one assist.
However, £40 million is a lot of money, especially when the club have already spent around £231 million since they were promoted to England’s top-flight (Transfermarkt). Dean Smith spoke about Barkley earlier this season and said: “His work ethic and attitude has been tremendous. He brings us that added bit of quality that we needed.”
The England star has definitely been a crucial asset for the club and helped them get to a place where they can target a European spot this season. Therefore, this could be a huge decision for Smith and the Villa board to make.
Villa might be able to negotiate a cheaper price for Barkley but if they can’t it remains to be seen if they’d spend such a large fee on him.
The former Everton star is only 27 and has time to grow as he reaches his prime, but it might be best if Villa looked for alternative options if they cannot negotiate a cheaper price for him.
