With Harry Redknapp actively looking for a striker to help shoulder the goalscoring burden on Emmanuel Adebayor and boost his side’s title challenge, Leandro Damiao is the latest player to be linked with Tottenham.
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs bid £15million for the Brazilian striker in the summer and are ready to renew their interest, although they will face stiff competition for his signature from Manchester United.
Damiao is somewhat of a late developer amongst Brazilian stars, only coming to prominence a year ago with a goal in the Copa Libertadores, at 21. Despite this he has racked up 52 goals in 86 games for Internacional, attracting the interest of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The Daily Mail suggest that Internacional are holding out for £24million for a striker who has scored one goal in his four international appearances, and I doubt that Manchester United will spend that much on a player who is unproven in European football.
That would leave Spurs free to bid on Damiao, with possible funds being raised from the potential sale of Roman Pavlyuchenko.
I think Spurs’ squad is good enough and although bringing a striker in this month would be a big boost at the club, a summer move would be more sensible.
