Newcastle United are facing a huge summer after a campaign that has largely fallen below expectations.
While last weekend’s victory over Brighton offered some relief, inconsistency has plagued much of the season, and several of the club’s marquee signings have failed to truly deliver.
As a result, changes are expected once again at St James’ Park — though before Newcastle can strengthen, they may first need to fight to keep hold of one of their top performers.
Bayern Make Contact for Gordon
Bayern Munich have made contact with Newcastle United over a potential summer move for Anthony Gordon, according to the Mail Online.
The England international — described as “really strong” by Eddie Howe — has been one of the few standout positives in an otherwise frustrating season for the Magpies, and his form has now attracted serious attention from Germany.
According to reports, Bayern have already opened communication with Newcastle regarding Gordon, while discussions between the player’s representatives and the club are expected to continue over the coming weeks. The Bundesliga champions are currently viewed as frontrunners should the winger leave this summer.
However, Newcastle’s valuation could prove a major obstacle. Reports suggest there is currently a gap of around £20 million between what Bayern are willing to pay and what Newcastle would accept.
The Magpies must also factor in Everton’s sell-on clause from Gordon’s move in 2023. The Merseyside club are entitled to 15 per cent of the profit Newcastle make on any future sale, meaning a sizeable chunk of any transfer fee would head back to Goodison Park.
For Newcastle, this now becomes a balancing act. Gordon is one of the few players to genuinely enhance his reputation this season — and losing him would create another major hole in a squad already in need of repair.
