The Transfer Tavern is awash with Chelsea fans this evening, trying to discover the latest on the goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge. 

Whilst our Blues punters are more than happy with the idea of having Thibaut Courtois between the west London sticks for the foreseeable future, the issue of who’ll be his understudy next term is still awaiting resolution.

According to Mirror Football, Bournemouth are set to make a £10million bid for Asmir Begovic at the end of the season, picking up where they left off during the January transfer window.

But finding a replacement could well prove difficult for the Blues; backup goalkeepers are more experienced and talented than ever before in the Premier League, but finding one happy to play second-fiddle is a rather difficult task.

Always happy to help, however, our landlord’s come up with three suggestions of replacements for the Bosnian international if he moves on in the summer.

Craig Gordon

He’s mostly remembered in England for an underwhelming spell at Sunderland after being purchased at a record fee for a British goalkeeper. But Craig Gordon is a talented glovesman and has always shown that in the Scottish Premiership, particularly since returning to his homeland with Celtic in 2014 after nearly two years out of the game.

The 34-year-old is on course to claim a third consecutive top flight title as their No.1 and has often impressed in the Champions League as well, showing he can play at a higher level. With his contract due to expire in 2017, the Blues could land him on the cheap – and prior experience in the Premier League is another added bonus.

Adrian

Adrian’s endured a difficult season, losing his starting berth to Darren Randolph, but there’s a reason he’s made over 100 Premier League appearances for West Ham. Nicknamed ‘Adrian’s Wall’ by the Irons faithful, the Spaniard can be impenetrable on his day and not long ago was regarded by many as the best shot-stopper outside of the top six.

Is Adrian going to significantly enhance Chelsea’s squad? Perhaps not. But he’s proven in the Premier League, still has a good few years left ahead of him at the age of 30 and is yet to extend his West Ham contract past the summer. On a free transfer, he could be a real steal.

Petr Cech

Why not? Not everybody’s been convinced by Petr Cech’s form since moving to Arsenal and he’s failed to provide the calming presence many expected when he arrived at the Emirates Stadium in 2015.

Of course, Cech’s still 34 years of age and could have a lot of football ahead of him near the top of the European game. But he’s probably a little too old for the No.1 berth at another truly elite club, so if the Czech international is ready to consider an understudy role rather than dropping down to the ‘next bests’ of the beautiful game, I’m sure he’d much rather take that up at Stamford Bridge, where he served for over a decade, than somewhere completely new.

It would also allow him to stay in London – one of the reasons he was seemingly so keen on joining the Gunners from Chelsea two years ago.
