Metro have Tottenham Hotspur fans looking up from their pints here in the Football Transfer Tavern, as they claim that the club are setting themselves up to offer one of their key players a new contract.

Jan Vertonghen is set to be offered a new deal at the North London club, with manager Tim Sherwood concerned that his top stars may well be tempted with offers elsewhere should the club fail to get into the top four this season, thus missing out on a Champions League spot.

The manager, who of course replaced Andre Villas Boas claimed: ‘It’s always a risk [losing the players]. But Tottenham are a massive club and will always attract the biggest name players. If players are coming here to build and progress with the side, they will pick Tottenham,

‘It’s a massive club, and players will come if they want. They know full well what this club can offer. If the be-all and end-all is the Champions League and we’re not in it, they have to make a decision.’

Of course, we agree in part with this, but as one of our punters notes, the Premier League is stronger than ever, and Spurs have a real chance of getting into the top four this season, and if not this season, next, meaning that the Belgium International may well stay and wait at least another season before making a move.
