Leeds United supporters are making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern following the news that Marcelo Bielsa has been appointed as the club’s new manager on a two-year deal.
The 62-year-old replaces Paul Heckingbottom in the Elland Road hotseat after the 40-year-old was relieved of his duties last month, having won just four of his 16 matches in charge of the Yorkshire giants. Nonetheless, there is much excitement among our resident Whites supporters given that former Argentina, Chile, Athletic Bilbao, and Lazio boss Bielsa has taken over at the club, ahead of what they hope will be a Championship promotion push this season.
As such, there are many excited and expectant Leeds fans in the Tavern, several of whom are now looking ahead to the rest of the summer transfer window in the hope that their side will make telling signings to match the ambition shown in luring Bielsa to Elland Road.
And one man several of those Leeds supporters lining up at the bar hope to see at their club next season is Charly Musonda, who had his loan at Scottish champions Celtic terminated last month.
The 21-year-old made the move to Celtic Park back in January of this year after failing to earn regular football at Stamford Bridge, with just seven senior appearances, only two of them starts, to show for his endeavours in the first half of the campaign.
Yet things didn’t improve greatly under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic with only eight appearances to show for his time north of the border, with his two-year loan move unsurprisingly cut short last month given a lack of playing time.
Nonetheless, the talented 21-year-old remains unlikely to command regular football at Chelsea, and as such Leeds must make an ambitious move to bring him to Elland Road in a bid to aid with their promotion quest.
The attacker may not have enjoyed the best of seasons last time round, but there is no doubting that he has genuine quality in the final third having scored ten goals and laid on six assists in 43 appearances for Chelsea’s development squad – it’s now time for Musonda to prove his worth in league football.
And where better than in the fiercely competitive Championship at a club like Leeds, who will no doubt be eyeing promotion this term following the appointment of the highly rated Bielsa.
Ultimately, one can never have enough options in the second tier such is the long, hard slog that is the Championship season, with it arguable that Leeds’ lack of depth has been the reason for their demise in the last two years having twice given themselves chances to go up, only for things to peter out as the season drew to a close.
Yet Musonda’s arrival would complement the likes of Samu Saiz, Pablo Hernandez, and Ezgjan Alioski in the attacking ranks, providing a viable alternative to the trio, as well as knocking on the door for their spot in the side.
Thus, with a deal for Bielsa done, Leeds must now seek to be equally-ambitious in luring £4.5 million-rated Musonda (as per Transfermarkt) to Elland Road.
