Cardiff City Record Transfers

The late Emiliano Sala was the Bluebirds record signing at just over £15m, before tragically passing away upon his arrival to the club – he will always be remembered. Moving on to Cardiff’s second-highest transfer arrival fee, Gary Medel was brought in from Sevilla back in 2013-14 for £11.70m.

The defensive midfielder was 26 at the time and he only lasted one season with the Bluebirds, as he moved on to Inter Milan for almost half the price they paid for him. This record transfer was followed up by young Championship duo, Josh Murphy and Bobby Reid ahead of the 2018-19 season. Murphy arrived from Norwich and Reid from Bristol City, each for just over £10m.

A young Steven Caulker arrived at Cardiff City from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. The Bluebirds paid over £8m for the English centre-back, and managed to offload him just one season later to QPR, making almost £1.5m profit – this was Cardiff’s largest-ever sale, and a record which still stands today.

As for record transfer departure fees, former strike partners, Bobby Reid and Kenneth Zohore, were sold in the summer of 2019-20 each for just over £8m. Reid joined Fulham, and Zohore left to play for West Bromwich Albion. Gary Medel officially left the Bluebirds for £7.20m, along with young English central midfielder, Jordon Mutch, who joined QPR for upwards of £6m.

Famous Cardiff City Transfers

The Bluebirds have had many top footballers arrive at their club throughout history, and there are some which you may have had no idea even played for them. Notably, England and Liverpool legend, Robbie Fowler, joined Cardfiff on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2007.

Despite his age, Fowler was valued at over £4m at the time, and many did not even know of ‘God’s’ brief spell at the Welsh club. Another iconic striker of his time, was former Dutch international, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who ended his football career with the Bluebirds in 2007-08. During his final season, he still managed to score seven goals which was not bad for a free transfer.

Welsh star, Aaron Ramsey, began his career with Cardiff City through their youth academy back in 1999. He was promoted to the first team in 2007, where he caught the eye of North London giants, Arsenal, who offered £5.76m for the central midfielder. Ramsey has gone on to have a successful career at Arsenal, despite many injuries, and he has recently moved to Italien giants, Juventus for nearly £40m in the summer of 2019.
