Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have enquired about the possibility of signing Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu in the current transfer window, according to Sports World Ghana.
As per the outlet, the player has just a year left on his current deal as Steve Bruce’s team look to cash in on him, with the Hoops already asking about his availability.
Indeed, being 28 years of age, perhaps it is a good time for the Tyneside club to cash in as Atsu may not be guaranteed first-team football in 2020/21. He was limited to just 24 games in all competitions in the 2019/20 season, in which he failed to score but did provide five assists (via Transfermarkt).

The Ghana international has not exactly been the most prolific of players in his whole footballing career so far. In a combined 299 matches for both club and country, Atsu has only managed to score 32 goals in total (per Transfermarkt), meaning that it takes him more than 10 appearances to register a goal on average.
Considering that he plays predominantly on the wing and in attacking positions, this goal return is arguably not enough to consider Atsu a major loss at St. James’ Park should he make the move to Neil Lennon’s side.

His figures do not really compare to the likes of attacking midfield teammates Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron either, both of whom averaged more shots, key passes, dribbles and long balls per game in the Premier league last season, according to Whoscored.
Thus, it may be wise for the Magpies to cash in on Atsu in this window while Celtic remain interested in him.
